NFIRS 5.0 Element: ‘Total Acres Burned’
Definition : This data element captures the total acres burned by a wildland fire.
Purpose : Recording the estimated number of acres burned indicates the magnitude of each fire and of the wildland fire problem overall. This can be used to evaluate progress in wildland fire prevention. This information can also help determine the magnitude of resources that should be devoted to fire protection and the cost effectiveness of various programs. An estimate of the number of acres burned represents a vital component of the overall fire loss picture.

Entry : Enter the total number of acres burned. If less than one acre was burned, the decimal point field should be used to denote tenths of an acre.
