NFIRS 5.0 Element: ‘Township’

Definition : Consists of 36 sections arranged in a six-by-six array, measuring 6 miles by 6 miles. Sections are numbered beginning with the northeast-most section, proceeding west to 6, then south along the west edge of the township and to the east.
This array is depicted below:
 
The last digit (decimal point) in this field denotes quarter Townships represented by the following coding:

3 1st Quarter
5 2nd Quarter
7 3rd Quarter
0 4th Quarter
Purpose : This information may be of value to local authorities for contacting the owner in connection with the fire and in making a long-term analysis of wildland fires in similar areas or on property under the same ownership.
 
Entry : Enter the alternate location information using the specific Latitude and Longitude where the fire started or, alternatively, enter the Section, Township, Range, and Meridian.
